Jack Daniel's Distillery

Shadley Associates is providing master planning and landscape architectural services for Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Over 250,000 visitors come to Lynchburg each year to tour this National Historic Register property. SA’s Master Plan for the Distillery prioritizes preservation of this fragile landscape while accommodating the competing functions of a major tourist attraction and world-class production facility. Work began with the creation of the Site Master Plan and continues with the implementation of projects outlined in the plan.

To date SA has provided full services for four major projects which have been constructed. Reconstruction greatly enhanced the site around Jack Daniel’s original office and the entrance to his famous spring, and the capacity and attraction of the Visitor’s Center were improved with a stone dining terrace and extensive perennial plantings.

Two completely new structures were also added to the grounds. The Mulberry Creek Footbridge, a 120’ span connecting the Distillery to Lynchburg Village, was designed to convey the manufacturing heritage of the Distillery and to withstand the frequent flooding of the creek. The Barbeque Pavilion is a large stone and timber structure with extensive placed “outcroppings” and a 40' tall stone fireplace. Sitting on a hill overlooking the Distillery and Lynchburg, it provides a scenic gathering space and seating for up to 500 people at a time. Planned future improvements include a new road to the BBQ Pavilion, incorporation of an off-site parking and shuttle system, interpretive materials for the Distillery tour, and a variety of improvements to several features of the property.

Work on the Distillery won a 2008 Design Award from the Tennesse Society of Landscape Architects.
