Green Street Park

Malden, Massachusetts

Green Street ParkShadley Associates started working on Green Street Park in 2004 with an extensive community process to develop an overall Master Plan. After requesting and receiving input for the project program from the neighborhood and through a series of public meetings and meetings with the City Councilor and the DPW, Shadley Associates prepared master plan alternatives and the final Master Plan that addressed the project goals as well as the site constraints, and included varying components of the many requested program elements. The Master Plan included a refurbished and improved Little League field, the replacement and expansion of a totlot, the refurbishing of existing basketball courts, and the creation of a small passive park to be used by the neighboring elderly housing residents.

In 2005, $100,000 of funding for the first construction phase became available and Shadley Associates prepared a construction documentation package for the refurbishing of the Little League Field. Improvements included both new fencing and new mesh on existing fence posts, new infield, sod and an irrigation system, and the work was completed in time for the spring 2006 season.

In 2007 Shadley Associates began design and construction documents for the expanded playground. This process included the development of several sketch alternatives and associated cost estimates and presentation of these at two public meetings. SA also produced complete construction documents, include Front End specifications, and administered the construction phase including pay requisition and change order processing and final contract close-out. This project was constructed within the limited of approximately $180,000 designated for this phase of the Master Plan implementation. Within the center hourglass shape is a major age-appropriate play structure, four swings, two spring riders, backless benches and room for future additional play pieces and their associated safety zones. Along the perimeter of the ellipse are several benches and game tables surrounded by lush shrub planting, shade and flowering trees.

In 2008, SA provided design, bidding and recently completed construction phase services for the refurbished basketball court and passive park, including new fencing, pavements, striping, posts/nets, the addition of two half-courts, plus the addition of a small passive park/garden for local elders, and the addition of several more play elements for the totlot. Within five years, the Master Plan process and three construction phases are complete.
