Railroad Street and Front Street Improvements

Bangor, Maine

Railroad Street and Front StreetRailroad Street and Front Street have been improved to become the direct connection between Main Street and the Bangor Waterfront. As part of the Bangor Waterfront Master Plan, a new configuration of streets was planned, with Railroad Street becoming the new gateway to the recreational, transportation and future development opportunities along the Penobscot River. Front Street, which parallels the Penobscot River, provides the primary access to the new parking area, the waterfront area, and connects with Railroad Street at the tracks.

Railroad Street and Front Street

While with CRJA, Ms. Shadley was Principal-in-Charge of this project which spanned several years, working with the City of Bangor on the Waterfront Master Plan and three phases of implementation. The Railroad Street and Front Street project includes new standards for pavements, site furnishing, traffic calming street layout including bicycle lanes and parallel parking, street trees and new signage. Granite medallions interpret twelve topics of Bangor's history, including sailing ships, the railroad, ice harvesting, logging, Native American crafts and aircraft. Ms. Shadley led the design work, the creation of the bid documents, and the construction phases. She worked extensively with the staff at City Hall and made multiple presentations to the Bangor City Council.

The work on the Bangor waterfront was prominently displayed during the National Folk Festival, which was held on the waterfront in 2001-2004. It has become a destination for Bangor residents and has attracted development interestin new residential buildings along Railroad Street and new hotel / office buildings along Main Street.
