Cambridge Street

The Cambridge Street project runs 1.5 miles in East Cambridge, and connects the Cambridge Hospital through Inman Square to the Lechmere MBTA station past businesses, residences, a school, a major courthouse, and several small public open spaces, such as Velucci Plaza. The City invested $8 million on new sidewalks with neckdowns, parallel parking, crosswalks, planting, two municipal parking lots and three small public plazas. The project broke new ground in that the new lights will be City-owned and the street and directional and street signs set a new standard.

Pam Shadley was Principal-in-Charge and Prime Consultant while with CRJA for this complex project spanning eight years, with extensive public and committee meetings and approvals. The landscape architects collaborated with two artists and the City staff to create a site design that balances the needs of this diverse, ethnic community with the goals of the City and with the project budget. The three year construction phase was completed in the fall of 2004. The illustrative renderings were prepared by Tony Platt of Platt Anderson Freeman.
