Salem Port Expansion
Salem, Massachusetts
In the fall of 2008, Shadley Associates worked with Bourne Consulting Engineering and the City of Salem on the Salem Port Expansion project. This Designated Port Area off of Derby Street will house a new port terminal building, piers with floating docks for major tourism, transportation and private commercial vessels, a pile-supported shoreline boardwalk, floats for recreational vessels, and parking to support these uses. The site is currently a gravel area supporting modest piers for the new Salem catamaran; the project will increase maritime use of Salem Harbor, one of Massachusetts’ largest natural harbors and its second deepest port. Shadley Associates provided site design to the City and consultant team of engineers, architects and economic consultants. The team held extensive community meetings and the plan evolved to reflect their concerns. The preliminary design phase was completed in December, 2008, and the design team is now working on final design.
