Malden Public Parks
Malden, Massachusetts
JP and Pam Shadley have worked with the Malden Redevelopment Authority, the City of Malden, its Councilors and residents on over twenty projects over the last twelve years under an Indefinite Quantities Contract. Each of these projects has unique characteristics, history, uses, constituencies and goals for improvement. For each of the parks, Shadley Associates has worked with community groups to develop programs that address hopes as well as concerns, and has also developed bid sets and assisted with construction. A sampling of the work follows:

• Lincoln Commons Tot lot: SA provided design and construction phase services for the creation of a new tot lot at Lincoln Commons, completed in 2005. • Miller Park: Improvements included the removal of two basketball courts, the creation of a U-8 soccer field and the rehabilitation of a third basketball court, which were complete at the end of 2006. • Tartikoff Park: The expansion and improvement of an existing skate park was complete in 2006. • Waitt’s Mount: SA designed the Master Plan, including extensive community meetings, to determine the future of this historic, 11-acre park from which many early residents watched the Battle of Bunker Hill. The Master Plan calls for a new Park Ranger residence to monitor appropriate use, new trails and handicapped access to the summit, habitat improvements and a new totlot. • Coytemore Lea Park: The first phase of construction, the rehabilitation and expansion of an existing tot lot, was complete in the summer of 2006 at this small park originally designed by the Olmsted Brothers. 2007 work included new universally accessible paths and a U-8 soccer field, 2008 work is a new Tai Chi Garden, and 2008 improvements included the addition of a shade pavilion, moon gate, special pavements, and planting. • Bell Rock Park: SA has assisted the City with masonry repair at this Olmsted Park and is currently working on stabilization of a WW II Memorial for Ward 4, and on expansion of memorial marker to include the entire City’s WWII veterans. • Trafton Park: includes the rehabilitation of an existing Little League field, including sod, infield mix and fencing, and the replacement and expansion of a totlot, with community support, and is under construction. • Malden Streetscapes: SA is working with the Mayor’s office and a local engineering firm to prepare design documents for improvements to Pleasant Street, one of the main downtown Malden streets.
