Brown-Forman Conference Center Garden

Louisville, Kentucky

The Conference Center Garden is one of several projects that Shadley Associates has designed and completed on the historic Brown-Forman Campus in Louisville, Kentucky. This garden and courtyard area accommodates very different uses—it serves as a pedestrian link between the new Conference Center and the Brown-Forman offices (linking through a previously installed colonnade and seating area, also designed by Shadley Associates), as well as an access route and receiving dock for trucks making deliveries to the Production Office Building and the Conference Center.

The functional aspects of this space had to remain intact, while the attraction and comfort for pedestrians was enhanced. Shadley Associates redesigned the Production Office Building loading dock, and softened its appearance with plantings. The open space needed for vehicular traffic was left in place, but the intimate feeling of the colonnaded space was extended further down the corridor between the two buildings with brick pavement, plantings and benches.
