Howard Street

Louisville, Kentucky

Shadley Associates prepared design, cost estimating and construction drawings for improvements to Howard Street in Louisville, Kentucky in 2005. Located on the historic Brown-Forman campus originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Howard Street improvements employed narrowing the street as a traffic calming measure and included new sidewalks and curbs, ADA compliant crossings, brick walkways and building entrances, three new outdoor seating areas, new street trees and plantings along the buildings, and new pedestrian lighting. The work protected the existing plant material and continued Brown-Forman’s investment in its campus to preserve the beauty of the streetscape while meeting modern needs for pedestrian safety. SA assisted with the construction of this work by coordinating with the contractor, reviewing submittals and tagging and locating plant material.

The Brown-Forman Corporation received the 2008 Restore America Hero Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for their "long-standing commitment to historic preservation"; the volume of work representing this commitment included the improvements made to Howard Street.
