Shadley Associates

University of New Hampshire - Main Street

Durham, New Hampshire

Shadley Associates recently worked with University planners and architects, Town of Durham planners and civic leaders, and with a multi-disciplinary team to develop design alternatives and construction drawings and to assist with construction for improvements to Main Street. Running through the heart of the campus, Main Street was overly-wide, leading to ambiguous traffic patterns and extended pedestrian crossings. The design team proposed traffic calming initiatives to reduce pavement width, increase safety at pedestrian crossings, add bike lanes and bus pull-outs and facilities, and improve signage, lighting and planting. The collaborative effort between the consultants and University and Town planners met the goals of both, improved safety and aesthetics for this important route through the middle of the Durham campus, and met State of NH DOT required standards. Project construction was completed in September, 2007.
