Bangor Waterfront
Bangor, Maine
Shadley Associates has been working with the City of Bangor on its waterfront for the last four years. While a Principal with another firm, Pam Shadley led the planning work that resulted in the new Waterfront District Master Plan, which has been guiding riverfront development for the last eight years. The Master Plan illustrates appropriate development locations, nearby desintations, as well as new and improved connections with downtown and existing linear parks. Since 2002, Bangor has invested approximately $9 million on public improvements such as roadways, parking, sidewalks, a universally accessible dock, bulkhead improvements with an ornamental railing, lighting, street furnishings, granite interpretive medallions, signage and planting. Working with City Departments and civic leaders, the landscape architects prepared designs that creatively met the needs of the community as well as the funding and construction requirements of the City. The Bangor Waterfront has been host to the National Folk Festival and the American Folk Festival.
Shadley Associates is currently designing a new 12 acre waterfront park as the key recreational amenity in the Waterfront District. The Master Plan for the new park creates a 1000-seat amphitheater set amidst trails, picnic areas, playgrounds and shoreline planting. A new water playground is expected to become a regional attraction. Supporting the new park are two new parking areas that also can be used to stage festivals and events, such as the American Folk Festival each August. The new park is subject to stringent DEP regulations on stormwater management and includes underground treatment chambers, localized stormwater filtration units, rain gardens and bioswales. Construction of the first phase is underway and will be complete in fall, 2010.
