First Ward Park
Charlotte, NC

First Ward Park will be an exciting and substantial new addition to the entire First Ward Neighborhood. At the center of this new 5-acre park will be a large open public lawn capable of accommodating concerts for 4,000 or more attendees at once. Edges of the lawn will be framed by over a hundred new native ornamental trees and thousands of native shrubs and flowers. While the park contributes greatly to the amount of pleasant green open space in the City, it will be able to host a wide range of public activities and features for the greater Charlotte community. The central lawn is encircled by nearly a quarter mile of walking paths that wind through a variety of beautiful park spaces including two major public fountains. The park will also contain public art, public restrooms, a snack/coffee shop, over sixty benches and will be well lit at night. There are over a dozen entrances into the park so it will be directly connected to the First Ward Neighborhood, First Ward Elementary School, ImagineON and the Downtown Center City.
University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Charlotte, NC

The construction of the University of North Carolina Charlotte’s Center City Building marks the return of UNCC to downtown Charlotte. Shadley Associates provided design consulting services to UNCC to assure that their new courtyard achieves the University’s goal to fully engage the urban environment and takes advantage of its proximity to the new 5 acre public open space at the future First Ward Park. SA’s design seamlessly integrates the park and the highly contemporary architectural vision for the building by KieranTimberlake Architects and Gantt Huberman Architects as Architects of Record. The proposed courtyard plaza, lawn terraces and seating will serve as a daily gathering place for students and faculty, a stage for UNCC special events and a major public gateway into the park. The courtyard will be completed in 2011.
